Magic: The Gathering’s next big crossover is with itself
Magic: The Gathering is launching its next major crossover storyline with “Reality Fracture,” which introduces characters to their mirror versions from an alternate reality. The narrative is the climax of a three-year storyline arc that began with the Wilds of Eldraine set and has seen core expansions building toward this multiverse-threatening event.
The story centers on planeswalker Jace Beleren’s ambitious attempt to create an entirely new multiverse, one designed to be free from the numerous existential threats that have plagued the Magic universe in recent years—including the Phyrexians and Eldrazi. However, this new multiverse would completely overwrite the existing one upon completion.
The Reality Fracture set features a unique mechanic: mirror matches between iconic planeswalkers and their opposite-aligned doppelgangers. The announcement highlights one example of this conflict: the fire-aligned planeswalker Chandra Nalaar facing off against a cryomantic (ice-aligned) version of herself. This approach mirrors common storytelling in superhero comics, where characters encounter alternate universe versions of themselves.
