If you can’t get enough of record-breaking Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, his newest TV series is based on an ’80s Sega game, and is out now
Matthew Rhys is having a significant moment in entertainment. The acclaimed actor made history at the Emmys, becoming the first man to win two leading actor Emmys in the same night for different genres—one for the comedy series Widow’s Bay and another for the limited series The Beast in Me. This achievement also made him the only person to win lead actor Emmys across all three categories, having previously won for the drama series The Americans in 2018.
His recent success continues with the release of Golden Axe, a new animated comedy series now available on Paramount+. The series is an adaptation of Sega’s 1989 arcade game of the same name and marks another notable television project for Rhys, who voices the dwarf warrior Gilius Thunderhead, one of the game’s iconic playable characters.
The adaptation brings the classic ’80s fantasy action game to television as a comedy, introducing the property to a new generation of audiences through a different medium than its original arcade and home console versions.
