Greta Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia adaptation for Netflix has revealed its first official look, featuring Aslan, the iconic talking lion central to C.S. Lewis’s fantasy series. The promotional image, unveiled in Empire magazine (UK), showcases a striking artistic interpretation with heterochromic eyes and intricate patterns resembling stitching, Trencadís mosaics, and melted scales—representing a modern take on the legendary character.
The film, titled Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, marks Gerwig’s venture into fantasy filmmaking following her success with Barbie. Meryl Streep has been cast as the voice of Aslan, bringing substantial prestige to the production. Gerwig explained her casting vision to Empire, seeking someone “profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness. Someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight.” The director specifically prioritized finding an actor older than 70 to deliver the wisdom and weight the character demands.
