The studio previously registered an identical trademark in 2016, when Sam Lake clarified it was not for a new game but rather for in-game video content within Quantum Break, filed purely to protect the legal status of the name.
The newly filed trademark comes after the original 2016 registration expired earlier this month. Rather than simply renewing the expired trademark, Remedy chose to file an entirely new entry with additional details included. This decision has sparked industry speculation about whether the studio’s intentions may have shifted since 2016.
If the purpose remained the same—merely protecting legal rights to the name for existing content—industry observers note that a straightforward renewal would have been sufficient.
