Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the highest-rated video game movie adaptation of all time with a 97% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. The achievement represents a rare success story in a notoriously difficult genre.

The previous record holder was Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which holds an 86% rating, with Werewolves Within also at 86% (though with a lower 60% user score). According to Rotten Tomatoes’ comprehensive rankings, only three video game movies have achieved “Certified Fresh” status, a designation indicating strong critical consensus. Beyond these top three entries, only six other video game adaptations have positive critical ratings.

The success is particularly striking given the Resident Evil franchise’s dismal film history. Prior films in the series—six Milla Jovovich-led movies and the recent Welcome to Raccoon City—were all poorly received by critics. Despite nearly 25 years of film adaptations, none had achieved critical acclaim, marking a dramatic reversal of the franchise’s pattern. Meanwhile, the video games themselves have only improved in quality over the same period.
