Fallout-Inspired Post-Apocalyptic ‘ATOM RPG’ Reinvented For Sequel
AtomTeam has revealed ATOM RPG 2, a sequel to their 2018 Fallout-inspired top-down RPG, representing a significant departure from the original formula. Shown at Tokyo Game Show, the sequel marks “immense changes” to the series, most notably shifting from the first game’s top-down isometric perspective to a third-person viewpoint.
In ATOM RPG 2, players control their character in third-person as they navigate an enormous open-world map filled with threats and post-apocalyptic survival mechanics. This redesign fundamentally reimagines the gameplay experience compared to the original’s focused, top-down design. The original ATOM RPG, released in 2018, was rooted in the post-apocalyptic setting of games like Fallout and Wasteland, delivering a compact RPG experience. The sequel appears to embrace a more expansive, exploration-focused philosophy.
AtomTeam co-founder Dmytro Martynenko discussed the creative choices behind the reinvention, with early builds already playable for press during the game show. The shift to third-person perspective and open-world design reflects a deliberate decision to evolve the series rather than replicate its predecessor. This demonstrates how established indie franchises can undergo substantial creative evolution for their sequels, with AtomTeam choosing to expand rather than iterate on the original formula.
