Dueling industry surveys show Japanese game devs are embracing AI, while North American ones are still skeptical

Japanese video game developers have rapidly embraced generative AI tools, according to the 2026 CESA Videogame Industry Report, contrasting sharply with more cautious adoption rates among North American counterparts.

The survey reveals striking growth in AI adoption among Japanese developers, rising from 51% in 2025 to 85.8% in 2026. The trend is even more pronounced in the online gaming sector, where a separate July survey found 100% adoption among developers.

Usage patterns show generative AI is becoming integral to development workflows. Of respondents, 63% report using generative AI tools daily, while 22.8% employ them on a less frequent basis. However, the survey did not differentiate between disciplines or types of AI applications, leaving open questions about how AI is being utilized across different roles—from code generation to concept art, in-game assets, and text content.

Despite the high adoption figures, the survey did not fully detail the specific benefits driving this rapid uptake, though developers cited various advantages for their workflows. The disparity between Japanese and North American adoption rates suggests differing attitudes toward AI in game development, with Japanese studios demonstrating significantly greater enthusiasm for integrating generative AI into their production pipelines.

This divergence highlights how different regional game industries are taking distinct paths on AI adoption, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics in global game development.
