Microsoft fixes Excel’s copy-paste bug, but only for a small group of people
Microsoft released a fix for a copy-paste bug in Excel that was introduced by its September Patch Tuesday security update, which contained nearly 1,000 security fixes. However, the bugs inadvertently created alongside these security improvements forced the company to issue emergency out-of-band updates.
Beyond the Excel issue, the problematic update also caused failures with Hyper-V Linux folder shares, Remote Desktop freezing, and USB audio functionality. Microsoft had to deploy multiple emergency patches to address these cascading system-level problems.
The Excel copy-paste fix carries significant limitations. The update is currently only available for Excel 2016, leaving users of other Excel versions still experiencing the bug. The fix also carries known issues, indicating the solution remains incomplete even for affected users.
The incident illustrates ongoing challenges with Microsoft’s update management for Windows 11.
