Sony Says Free TV On PS5 Is “One Plus One Equaling A Lot More Than Two”
Sony has launched “Live TV on PS5,” a free, ad-supported streaming service offering over 100 channels of television and movies to all PlayStation 5 owners. The initiative represents a strategic expansion of the company’s platform beyond gaming into broader entertainment.
Keith Le Goy, chairman of Sony Pictures Television, described the launch as a synergistic opportunity, framing it as “one plus one equaling a lot more than two.” The company aims to leverage PS5’s 40-50 million highly engaged users—many of whom enjoy movies and TV content alongside gaming—to reach audiences who might otherwise avoid traditional linear television.
According to Le Goy, this demographic represents a “very hard-to-reach” audience that is particularly attractive to advertisers seeking younger, gaming-oriented viewers. By integrating Sony’s television content library directly into the PS5 platform, the company creates a new advertising-supported revenue stream while strengthening user engagement on the console.
The move positions PS5 as a comprehensive entertainment hub rather than purely a gaming device. This strategy aligns with industry trends toward free-to-access, ad-supported content platforms similar to services like Tubi and Pluto TV, but integrated directly into a gaming console with established user trust and daily engagement.
