Despite controversial reviews and online mockery, Marvel’s Wolverine looks to have sold 1.9m on PS5 - and over 1 in 5 sales are physical

Marvel’s Wolverine has defied mixed critical reception to achieve strong commercial performance in its opening days. According to data from Alinea Analytics, the Insomniac Games title sold approximately 1.9 million copies within its first three days following the September 15 release, generating an estimated $130 million in revenue. The figure includes roughly 1 million copies from pre-launch digital pre-orders, with physical sales accounting for over 22.9% of total revenue.

Despite criticism surrounding the game’s design—including issues with UI hints, quick-time event reliance, platforming, and combat mechanics—which contributed to a 77 Metacritic score (one of the lowest for a Sony first-party game in years), the game has become PlayStation’s bestselling title of 2026. It outperformed other major 2026 PS5 releases including MLB The Show 26 (1.5 million copies), Marathon (1.8 million units across all platforms), Saros (510,000 units), and Marvel Token: Fighting Souls (740,000 units).

The strong physical sales percentage is notable given Sony’s announced plan to cease PlayStation disc production by 2028. While the sales data comes from third-party analysis rather than official Sony announcements—the company has not yet released official figures, though it has historically done so for major PlayStation Studios releases—the figures suggest robust consumer interest despite online skepticism and mixed reviews that circulated following the game’s launch.
