48 Years Later, Anime’s Most Beautiful Sci-Fi Space Epic Is Officially Making a Comeback
Nearly half a century after its 1978 debut, the classic anime Galaxy Express 999 is making a theatrical comeback. Announced in July via the official X account of late creator Leiji Matsumoto, a new film in the beloved science fiction series is in development. Toei Animation, the studio behind the original series, is producing the film with veteran director Rintaro—who helmed the acclaimed 1979 Galaxy Express 999 film—providing the story concept.
Galaxy Express 999 stands as one of anime’s most influential space adventures, with its intergalactic narrative and iconic visual design shaping the medium for generations. The franchise follows the journey of a sentient train carrying passengers across the cosmos, blending philosophical science fiction storytelling with stunning animation.
The revival marks a significant moment for the franchise, with the related film Adieu Galaxy Express 999 also returning to theaters for its 45th anniversary, beginning in Japan in December 2026. Makiko Matsumoto, eldest daughter of series creator Leiji Matsumoto, is involved in the project, ensuring the creator’s legacy continues through official channels. The involvement of acclaimed director Rintaro suggests this theatrical revival aims to honor the original’s artistry while introducing the series to new audiences.
