Marvel’s Wolverine Hotfix Tones Down Scent Trail Visuals
Marvel’s Wolverine launched on September 15 to mixed reviews, with one feature drawing significant criticism from players: the overly prominent scent trail mechanic. Players complained that the game’s heavy-handed use of scent trails to direct them to objectives was excessive, with some humorously comparing the visual effect to inappropriate odors. The feature became a focal point for negative feedback in the game’s opening week.
In response to this backlash, developer Insomniac Games released hotfix v1.001.005 on September 18, just three days after launch. The update addresses player concerns by reducing the opacity of the scent trails and associated audio sense indicators to make these visual elements less intense. In addition to this gameplay adjustment, the patch also fixes several crash-causing issues affecting stability.
Insomniac stated that the team has been listening to feedback and committed to “continue to evaluate ways to further improve” the feature, suggesting additional adjustments or changes are being considered. The developer has also hinted at the possibility of adding a toggle option that would allow players to disable the feature entirely.
Despite the criticism surrounding this mechanic, sales analysts predict that Marvel’s Wolverine is positioned to be a significant commercial success for PlayStation 5.
