Hideo Kojima responds to accusations of Physint being over budget and late on deadline, says he still “loves Sony” despite collapse of publishing deal
Sony has ended its publishing deal with Kojima Productions for the action espionage title Physint in a significant industry shift. The decision was delivered to legendary director Hideo Kojima via Zoom call in June, leaving him shocked and surprised. According to reports, Sony’s withdrawal stemmed from concerns regarding the game’s budget, profitability potential, and exclusivity commitment.
Kojima, who has collaborated with Sony for approximately 30 years, expressed no anger toward the publisher despite the abrupt termination. “Nothing could’ve prepared me for their decision to step away from the project,” Kojima stated, though he emphasized that he still “loves Sony.” He was initially unable to inform his staff immediately after the announcement.
Microsoft has taken over publishing duties for Physint following a three-month pitching period by Kojima Productions. The game, positioned as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, is now in development with Xbox handling distribution. Kojima remains uncertain whether the title will eventually release on PlayStation 6 and has not yet finalized engine choices, including whether to use Decima.
The shift highlights the complexities developers face navigating relationships with major platform holders and represents a notable example of publishing volatility in the contemporary gaming industry.
