Hideo Kojima Has Not Decided Whether PHYSINT Will Use Decima
Hideo Kojima’s upcoming espionage thriller PHYSINT has undergone a major shift following a separation between Kojima Productions and PlayStation. Microsoft’s Xbox division has now become the new publisher partner for the project, marking a significant change in the game’s development trajectory.
Kojima revealed in an interview with IGN that decisions regarding the game’s engine remain undecided. While the studio previously worked with PlayStation’s proprietary Decima engine on Death Stranding, no final decision has been made on whether PHYSINT will continue using that technology with Xbox’s new support and resources.
The transition came after PlayStation reportedly dropped the project due to budget concerns and missed deadlines. Kojima Productions disputed these characterizations, cautioning against believing unverified reports about the split. Despite the fallout, Xbox has provided new technological support and resources to keep the project moving forward.
Regarding the game’s platform exclusivity, Kojima stated that such decisions ultimately rest with Xbox, with further announcements expected in the future. When asked if PHYSINT might still release on PlayStation despite the recent separation, Kojima could not confirm either way, indicating that platform availability remains uncertain pending Xbox’s official announcements. The development represents part of Xbox’s broader strategic reset, which has included a renewed focus on console exclusives.
