Bungie is freeing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns after Marathon “did not reach as many players as we had hoped”

Bungie announced plans to restore the Destiny franchise following intense fan backlash. Studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon GM Josh Deane released a video and blog post committing to “return Destiny to its original promise” and restore years of vaulted Destiny 2 content, including campaigns, raids, and destinations.

The announcement reverses course on the studio’s earlier messaging. Bungie had concluded Destiny 2’s major content updates in May with the Monuments of Triumph update and confirmed Destiny 3 was not in development, decisions that sparked significant player outcry. Acknowledging these missteps, Bungie stated the studio had “lost sight” of what players valued and pledged to “earn back your trust” through improved game delivery.

The studio also addressed Marathon, its extraction shooter that underperformed player expectations. Rather than abandoning the title, Bungie plans to evolve Marathon beyond its extraction shooter formula into a “deeper survival experience,” clarifying the game was “never intended to replace Destiny.” New leadership emphasized Destiny as “foundational to Bungie’s future,” with plans for new Destiny stories and games alongside the content restoration initiative.
