Double Fine’s New Game Project Raises Half a Million Before Hitting Controversy

Double Fine Productions, the studio behind Psychonauts and Brütal Legend, was among the developers released from Xbox Game Studios during Microsoft’s major gaming restructuring in July 2026. Rather than viewing the separation negatively, studio head Tim Schafer framed it as a return to Double Fine’s indie roots.

In late August 2026, Schafer announced the revival of Amnesia Fortnight, the studio’s long-running game jam event. The initiative will produce both a new game and a documentary. To fund the project, Double Fine launched a Kickstarter campaign—continuing a crowdfunding tradition that has defined the studio since successful campaigns for Broken Age and Psychonauts 2.

The Kickstarter mechanics reflect Double Fine’s collaborative approach: backers can vote on their favorite concepts from 12 game ideas, with the top choices being developed into playable prototypes. The campaign raised $500,000, demonstrating continued fan support for the studio’s projects. The initiative represents a full-circle moment for Double Fine, which pioneered modern video game crowdfunding and now returns to those roots after its corporate chapter at Microsoft.
