Wolverine Dev Denies Using GenAI After Weird-Looking In-Game Sign Discovered

Insomniac Games has denied allegations that Marvel’s Wolverine contains AI-generated assets after fans discovered an oddly-rendered bathroom sign in the game. The company’s community and marketing director James Stevenson attributed the unusual appearance to a “UV map bug” rather than generative AI, and confirmed that a fix is in development.

“There are no AI-generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine,” Stevenson stated directly. While Insomniac’s previous title, Spider-Man 2 (2023), utilized machine-learning technology to streamline development, the studio has not incorporated AI-generated assets into Wolverine. However, Insomniac indicated plans to continue exploring machine-learning applications in future projects, though AI-generated content remains off-limits for now.

Marvel’s Wolverine launched on September 15 to commercial success. The discovery of the unusual bathroom sign reflects growing community scrutiny regarding generative AI use in game development, an increasingly common practice as developers seek to optimize production timelines and resources. Insomniac’s response underscores the distinction developers are making between machine-learning optimization tools and AI-generated content, a nuance that has become important as the industry grapples with how to transparently communicate AI usage to players.
