Ninja Scroll Director Explains Why He Hasn’t Made a New Movie in Almost 20 Years

Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the legendary anime director behind cult-classic Ninja Scroll, has explained his absence from filmmaking over nearly two decades. In an interview timed with Ninja Scroll’s 4K theatrical re-release in October, Kawajiri discussed his creative process and the reasons behind his extended hiatus from directing feature films.

Kawajiri is recognized as a towering figure in anime cinema, celebrated for directing influential works including Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Goku: Midnight Eye, Wicked City, and Demon City Shinjuku. These films established his distinctive artistic style and signature approach to pulp storytelling, influencing multiple generations of animators and filmmakers.

Despite his substantial contributions to animation, Kawajiri has not helmed a major film project in approximately twenty years. The upcoming 4K re-release of Ninja Scroll provided an opportunity for him to reflect on his career and address questions about his creative direction.

The re-release represents renewed interest in Kawajiri’s work, bringing his seminal 1993 film to contemporary audiences in enhanced video quality. Ninja Scroll remains a touchstone of anime filmmaking and continues to influence modern animation production.
