I tried to make a jpg bigger than mathematically possible out of an entire year’s worth of PC Gamer magazine pages

PC Gamer magazine has created a novel photo mosaic artwork using pages from their 2004 magazine archives. In this creative project, individual magazine pages function as pixels to compose a larger image, creating a unique visual representation that bridges digital art and print history. The mosaic is displayed at over 6000% magnification, allowing viewers to clearly see each individual magazine page that comprises the final artwork.

The project emerged following the digitization of PC Gamer’s complete archive, which spans from the magazine’s founding through 2008. Acquiring these materials required significant effort, as the physical archives were stored in a regularly flooded basement at PC Gamer’s offices. An unnamed employee undertook the laborious task of scanning every single page to create the digital collection.

The magazine’s editorial team has been experimenting with different creative applications for these digitized assets. One journalist suggested transforming the archive pages into photo mosaics, treating each page as a discrete visual element. This experimental approach exemplifies how publications are finding innovative ways to engage with their historical materials in the digital age.

The resulting artwork showcases the visual richness of PC Gamer’s design and content from 2004, while demonstrating the technical feasibility of creating large-scale images from thousands of individual scanned pages. The project illustrates both the value of preserving gaming media archives and the creative potential of reimagining historical content through contemporary digital techniques.
