Ahead of GTA 6, Rockstar warn modders against against making unofficial main story expansions, unauthorised ports and mods that combine GTA maps

Rockstar Games has released new modding guidelines aimed at limiting certain types of community-created modifications ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6’s forthcoming PC release. The guidelines, posted on September 10th, specifically prohibit modders from creating unofficial main story expansions, building mods that combine maps from different GTA titles, and developing unauthorized ports of the game to platforms where it hasn’t officially been released.

The studio emphasized that these restrictions reflect their fundamental right as creators to control how their intellectual property and brand are used by others. While the modding community has historically thrived around GTA titles, Rockstar anticipates a significant surge in modification activity once the PC version launches, prompting the need for clearer enforcement boundaries.

The restrictions suggest Rockstar is taking a more hands-on approach to content moderation around GTA 6 compared to its predecessors. The prohibition on cross-title map mods indicates the publisher wants to prevent the creation of hybrid experiences that might blur the boundaries between different games in the franchise. Similarly, the ban on unauthorized ports addresses concerns about the game appearing on unsupported platforms.
