Steam Frame’s odd charging behaviour gets patched: cuts recharge times in half in some instances
Valve has released SteamOS 0.3.0, the first software update for the Steam Frame VR headset following its recent launch. The patch addresses several usability issues, with the most significant improvement being “substantially faster charging while unit is off or sleeping,” which reduces charging times by approximately 50 percent in certain scenarios.
Charging performance emerged as a notable drawback of the device. During pre-launch testing, the Steam Frame required over two hours to charge from completely depleted to full battery. The slow charging experience raised concerns about the device’s charging behavior, making the speed improvements particularly welcome for users.
Beyond the charging enhancements, the SteamOS 0.3.0 update includes a microphone bug fix and improvements to controller tracking smoothness. Battery longevity itself remains a limitation of the hardware—the Steam Frame drains its battery relatively quickly during intensive use, such as when running demanding VR titles like Half-Life: Alyx in standalone mode.
The update represents Valve’s response to early user feedback following the device’s launch through its typical reservation and waitlist system. While the charging speed improvements address one of the device’s early criticisms, fundamental battery capacity constraints persist, meaning users will still need to manage playtime carefully during extended sessions.
