Blizzard layoffs are reportedly imminent, days after an exciting BlizzCon and a seemingly popular World of Warcraft: Forever beta

Reports of impending layoffs at Blizzard Entertainment emerged just days after a well-received BlizzCon presentation and the launch of the World of Warcraft: Forever beta. However, subsequent updates to the story suggest that Blizzard may have successfully avoided inclusion in Microsoft’s recent restructuring of its gaming operations.

Microsoft’s Xbox division announced a significant wave of layoffs affecting 268 employees across multiple studios. The cuts included the complete closure of Ninja Theory, a substantial downsizing at Halo Studios, and the reassignment of Halo development to another studio division. In contrast, an internal email from Blizzard Entertainment to its workforce, verified by an Xbox representative, indicated that the company and specifically its World of Warcraft department would not be impacted by these announcements.

The juxtaposition of layoff speculation against the backdrop of Blizzard’s recent positive announcements highlighted the volatility of the gaming industry during a period of significant consolidation and restructuring among major publishers.
