Hipster Whale could revive or reimagine a range of retro classics after Atari acquisition

Hipster Whale, the Australian developer behind the massively successful Crossy Road, has been acquired by Atari in a major consolidation move for the gaming industry. The acquisition represents a significant turning point for the studio 14 years after its breakout hit.

Crossy Road became a cultural phenomenon following its 2014 launch, amassing over 340 million downloads and generating $250,000 per day in revenue at its peak. Within just 90 days of release, the game earned Hipster Whale $10 million. The game’s extraordinary success provided the studio with the luxury of declining acquisition offers for nearly a decade and a half, with co-founder Matt Hall noting there had been “ongoing conversations” since launch week.

The appeal of Atari’s offer ultimately proved irresistible where previous acquirers had failed. Under Atari’s ownership, Hipster Whale is now exploring opportunities within the publisher’s extensive catalog of retro intellectual property, with potential plans to revive or reimagine classic titles for contemporary audiences. This acquisition highlights how successful indie developers are increasingly becoming valuable assets for established publishers seeking to leverage both modern development talent and legacy gaming franchises.
