Intel reportedly collaborating with AUO on microLED panels, which could help make the ultimate display tech more mainstream

Intel and AU Optronics (AUO) have reportedly partnered on microLED display technology, according to Taiwanese outlet Economic Daily. The collaboration centers on a newly patented approach to embedding semiconductor components directly into glass substrates. Intel has secured a US patent for an “IC Package with Micro LEDs” technology that involves embedding at least part of a semiconductor chip within a glass substrate.

MicroLED displays are widely regarded as the ultimate flat panel display technology, offering superior performance compared to current alternatives like OLED. However, the primary barrier to mainstream adoption has been manufacturing complexity and cost. This partnership suggests Intel and AUO are working to address these limitations through a more efficient production method.

The core innovation involves integrating electronics more directly into the display substrate, which could streamline manufacturing and reduce production costs. By combining Intel’s semiconductor expertise with AUO’s established display manufacturing capabilities, the companies aim to achieve economies of scale that have historically eluded microLED producers.

If successful, this collaboration could accelerate microLED’s transition from niche premium applications to more accessible consumer devices. The partnership represents Intel’s strategic expansion beyond traditional processor manufacturing into adjacent display technologies, while AUO diversifies its display panel portfolio. While specific timelines and commercial applications remain unclear, the patent filing indicates substantial progress toward making microLED technology viable for mass production.
