What the hell are you guys doing?

Microsoft has reorganized its gaming division, placing Obsidian Entertainment under Bethesda Softworks’ management structure. Under this new arrangement, Obsidian will continue developing its current projects, including the survival game Grounded, while also collaborating with Bethesda Game Studios on a new Fallout title in active development.

This restructuring introduces an additional management layer between Microsoft and Obsidian, adding oversight responsibility through Bethesda. The move appears to contradict Microsoft’s publicly stated commitment to reducing management bureaucracy and streamlining operations across its divisions. By introducing a new tier of management responsibility, the organizational change raises questions about the strategic rationale behind consolidating the two studios under unified oversight.

Obsidian Entertainment and Bethesda Softworks have historically operated as separate development entities with distinct organizational cultures and technical methodologies. The decision to place Obsidian under Bethesda’s purview represents a significant restructuring of how these studios will be managed going forward.
