‘I’m Too Old’: Marvel Star Says He’s Officially Retired From His Beloved Guardians of the Galaxy Role as Rocket Raccoon
Sean Gunn, known for his role in Gilmore Girls, has officially retired from his motion capture performance as Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers film franchises. After portraying the character across five films and one holiday television special, Gunn announced his departure after recently turning 50, citing the physical demands of the role as the primary reason for stepping away.
The motion capture work for Rocket requires extensive crouching and squatting movements, with Gunn describing the position as a “catcher’s crouch” that he maintains while performing on set among his co-stars. Over the years, these repetitive physical movements have begun to take a noticeable toll on his body’s physiology, prompting the decision to retire from the character.
While Gunn provided the motion capture performance and physical movements for Rocket, actor Bradley Cooper is responsible for dubbing the character’s distinctive voice during post-production. Gunn’s retirement from the role marks the end of his tenure with the character and raises questions about future casting of the motion capture performer for Rocket Raccoon in upcoming Marvel projects.
