Blizzard layoffs are reportedly imminent, days after an exciting BlizzCon and a seemingly popular World of Warcraft: Forever beta
Reports of imminent layoffs at Blizzard surfaced following the studio’s recent BlizzCon event and the positive reception of World of Warcraft: Forever’s beta. However, updates within hours clarified that Blizzard would not be affected by the latest wave of industry cuts.
The confusion arose as part of a broader restructuring affecting Microsoft’s Xbox division, which saw 268 job losses across multiple studios. An email from Blizzard to employees, verified by an Xbox representative, stated that the World of Warcraft department was not included in “today’s announcements,” providing relief amid broader industry turbulence.
The Xbox layoffs severely impacted other studios. British developer Ninja Theory was closed entirely, while Halo Studios was substantially downsized. Halo development was transferred to Activision as part of the restructuring, representing a major reorganization of Microsoft’s gaming portfolio.
The timing was particularly striking given Blizzard’s recent momentum. BlizzCon delivered enthusiastic reception, and World of Warcraft: Forever, the long-requested legacy server option, generated considerable positive buzz among players. The initial uncertainty about whether these successes would shield the studio from cuts was quickly resolved, providing some stability for Blizzard employees even as the wider gaming industry continued to experience significant employment challenges.
