As Halo goes to Activision, fans are worried about this year’s Halo Fest and a potential lore reboot from the Call of Duty publisher
Microsoft has handed development of the next mainline Halo game to Activision as part of sweeping restructuring in the Xbox division that includes 268 layoffs at Halo Studios. This marks a significant shift for the franchise, which has remained in-house at Microsoft since its inception. Activision has stated it is assembling a “purpose-built team” separate from its Call of Duty studios to create what it calls “the greatest Halo game ever” while remaining true to what made players love the series originally.
The transition has sparked substantial uncertainty among fans and industry observers. An unverified rumor from a user known as TechnicalHalo claims Activision plans to completely reboot the Halo franchise, discarding existing lore in favor of a fresh start. This has divided the community, with some welcoming the opportunity for a reset after the disappointing reception to 2021’s Halo Infinite, while others fear a reboot could alienate longtime fans invested in Master Chief’s established narrative.
The restructuring has created additional concerns beyond the franchise transition. Halo Studios is being severely reduced, leaving questions about whether this year’s Halo Fest will proceed as planned. The disruption was particularly brutal for some staff—one cinematic director was promoted and then laid off within the same week. Marcus Lehto, co-creator of the original Halo, expressed being “shocked but not entirely surprised” by both the studio’s closure and the franchise move.
While Activision’s involvement could bring resources and industry expertise to revitalize the franchise following Halo Infinite’s middling response, the publisher faces significant pressure to prove it can respectfully steward a series with deeply established legacy and lore. The coming months will likely reveal more about Activision’s creative vision for Halo’s future.
