Wistful about Myst VI

Cyan has cancelled its Myst project, approximately two months after releasing a three-minute trailer showcasing the abandoned game. The promotional material featured actor Noshir Dalal performing the role of the game’s primary antagonist—an angry, Lex Luthor-inspired megalomaniac character driven by the pursuit of an in-game book.

The cancellation means players will never experience the full performance from Dalal in this character, disappointing those who had seen the trailer. The decision to axe the project is attributed to insufficient venture capital funding, a common challenge facing ambitious game developments in the current market climate.

The loss of this Myst title reflects broader struggles within the gaming industry regarding the viability of mid-scale independent projects. Without backing from major publishers or sustained investor interest, even established franchises face cancellation risks. This incident underscores the volatility of game development funding and the impact venture capital decisions have on creative output—particularly affecting projects that don’t fit the live-service or guaranteed blockbuster model.
