Discord launches controversial age-verification system “using the most privacy-preserving approach we could build” months after first delay

Discord has officially rolled out its age verification system, eight months after delaying the controversial policy following significant backlash in February 2026. The delay allowed the company to redesign the approach after privacy concerns emerged, particularly following a data breach that exposed users’ personal identification documents.

The revised system replaces the original requirement for video selfies and government ID with an algorithmic approach based on “account signals”—including account age, server membership, and gameplay history—to estimate user ages automatically. Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy emphasized the updated system uses “the most privacy-preserving approach we could build.”

Users who opt for manual verification can now choose from multiple non-invasive methods: credit cards, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, or AgeKey (which doesn’t share personal data). Discord estimates 90% of users will not need to verify their age.

Accounts estimated to belong to 13-17-year-olds receive “teen-appropriate” restrictions, limiting access to age-gated channels and obscuring sensitive content, while adult users experience no changes. The rollout is global except in Australia and the UK. Vishnevskiy acknowledged the company’s previous communication failures, admitting Discord had not adequately explained the policy’s reasoning and that the initial approach proved controversial internally and externally.
