Feature: 30fps Frame Generation On Switch 2: Does Interpolating to 60fps Make Sense?

Frame generation technology has arrived on Nintendo Switch 2, with developers experimenting with the technique to interpolate 30fps gameplay into something resembling 60fps—a significant departure from how hardware manufacturers Nvidia and AMD typically recommend the feature be used. The technology is being implemented in two high-profile action games: Stellar Blade and Dragon’s Dogma 2.

However, developers are taking different approaches. In Stellar Blade’s current demo, frame generation is mandatory, offering no option to switch back to native 30fps gameplay. Dragon’s Dogma 2 takes a more consumer-friendly stance, allowing players to toggle between a native 30fps mode and frame-generated 60fps, giving them the choice of whether to use the interpolation technique.

This implementation has sparked debate within the gaming community about whether interpolating from 30fps to 60fps makes practical sense, particularly in action-oriented games like Stellar Blade, which emphasizes tight combat timing and responsive controls. Critics have questioned whether the visual smoothness gained from frame generation outweighs potential input latency and other artifacts.

Stellr Blade developer Shift Up appears to be listening to community feedback, with reports suggesting a toggle option similar to Dragon’s Dogma 2’s implementation may be coming. This would represent a significant shift from the mandatory frame generation in the current demo, giving players more control over their gameplay experience.
