33 Years Later, a Beloved Pair of SNES RPGs Are Finally Getting Remakes
Developer Taito has partnered with Sweden-based publisher Clear River Games to bring classic SNES RPGs Lufia 1 & 2 back to modern platforms. The remakes, titled The Sinistrals Saga, will launch on Windows PC and consoles in 2027.
The Lufia series represents an important part of the SNES RPG library from the early 1990s. The first game, Lufia and the Fortress of Doom, released in 1993 and is considered one of the best SNES RPGs ever made. The story opens with an epic battle featuring four heroes—Maxim, Selan, Artea, and Guy—who must infiltrate a mysterious floating fortress.
These games are lesser-known but beloved entries in the SNES RPG catalog, standing alongside more famous titles like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and Earthbound. However, unlike those more well-known classics, the Lufia games have become increasingly difficult to find and experience on modern hardware.
This remake announcement represents an important effort in game preservation, bringing these classic titles back to accessible platforms for both longtime fans and new players discovering the series for the first time. The 2027 release window gives the development team time to ensure quality ports of these 33-year-old games while respecting the original designs that made them beloved classics.
