World of Warcraft Would Never Work on PS5 or Xbox

At BlizzCon, Blizzard announced that World of Warcraft: Forever, a remixed and updated version of classic WoW, will include official gamepad support. However, despite this new feature, the developers confirmed that the MMO will not be coming to PS5 or Xbox consoles.

This decision initially seems counterintuitive. If World of Warcraft works well on a gamepad, the logical next step would be to expand the game’s reach to console players. However, after testing the gamepad implementation in the Forever beta, the reasoning becomes clearer.

The gamepad support itself is actually quite good—it’s a viable way to play the game that functions smoothly. The issue isn’t technical capability or poor implementation. Rather, the gamepad controls feel like an addition grafted onto a game fundamentally designed for keyboard and mouse gameplay. While functional, the experience would never be mistaken for one where gamepad control was a primary design consideration from the ground up.

This highlights a broader challenge in adapting PC-first MMOs to console platforms. World of Warcraft’s core systems, interface design, and gameplay mechanics were built around traditional mouse-and-keyboard input. While modern console games have demonstrated that complex MMOs can work on controllers with proper redesign, doing so would likely require significant UI and design modifications to WoW: Forever—changes that may not align with Blizzard’s vision or represent a justified investment.

The announcement indicates that while Blizzard is willing to modernize WoW’s input options for PC players, a full console port remains outside the studio’s current plans for the franchise.
