WoW Forever Is Not Built for Retail Players, Dev Says

Blizzard developer Matthew Armstrong has clarified that World of Warcraft: Forever is designed specifically for vanilla WoW enthusiasts rather than modern retail players. Speaking on Twitter on September 22, Armstrong explained that the relaunch aims to capture the authentic vanilla experience that defined the MMO over 20 years ago.

Armstrong emphasized that the design philosophy prioritizes authenticity over convenience. He revealed he spent the past year relearning and mastering vintage development techniques rather than relying on modern shortcuts, despite being more familiar with contemporary retail methods. He deliberately avoided using modern conveniences like height maps on textures, which would have been easier to implement but would compromise the vanilla feel.

The statement comes amid ongoing debate about who the game is intended for, following an overwhelming response during its first beta test—so many players attempted to access it simultaneously that the server infrastructure was overwhelmed. Since its announcement at BlizzCon 2026, WoW Forever has generated significant community discussion and interest.

Armstrong clarified that while he respects retail players and counts himself among them, the project wasn’t designed with that audience in mind. He acknowledged that most retail players would prefer modern conveniences and wouldn’t necessarily appreciate the intentional limitations of vanilla design. The developer also noted that while authenticity is core to WoW Forever’s identity, the game isn’t attempting a perfect 1:1 recreation—suggesting some thoughtful updates may be included.
