The Lord of the Rings Star Andy Serkis is Working on a Sci-Fi Adaptation of The Odyssey for Audible

Andy Serkis, the acclaimed actor known for his motion-capture performances in The Lord of the Rings films, is set to narrate Odysseus Rising, a science fiction adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. The audiobook project, written by acclaimed author Adrian Tchaikovsky, will be released exclusively on Audible on February 25, 2027.

Serkis will perform the complete audiobook, bringing his distinctive voice work talents to the reimagined classic. Rather than remaining in ancient Greece, the adaptation transposes the epic tale into deep space, featuring spaceships, futuristic gods, and devastated worlds in place of the original mythology and Mediterranean setting.

The project has been in development for several years before its release date was recently announced. Its launch comes months after Christopher Nolan’s theatrical adaptation of The Odyssey, an IMAX blockbuster featuring Tom Holland and Matt Damon, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Homer’s source material to contemporary audiences and creators.

The opening of Odysseus Rising establishes its setting: “After a decade of war, Ilium is reduced to a ruined world,” suggesting the adaptation will maintain the epic’s core narrative of conflict and hardship while updating its aesthetic to science fiction. Tchaikovsky’s version represents another in a long tradition of modern retellings that have reimagined classical texts for new audiences and media formats.
