March 2027 Could Be Make-Or-Break For Marathon
Bungie has unveiled an ambitious revamp for Marathon, its extraction shooter that has struggled since its March 2026 launch. The studio plans major changes arriving in March 2027, fundamentally shifting the game’s direction from a “cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience” to one that appeals to a broader audience.
The revamp will introduce several new gameplay modes to complement the original extraction gameplay. Most notably, Marathon will receive its first dedicated permanent PvE mode, allowing players to enjoy cooperative experiences outside the high-stakes competitive extraction format. A new team deathmatch mode will also launch, providing another alternative way to engage with the game.
Beyond new modes, Bungie is implementing a redesigned onboarding experience aimed at helping new and returning players understand the game’s systems and build confidence before tackling more challenging content. The developer is also introducing a social hub feature and expanding the game world with locations like the fungus-filled Perimeter.
The broader strategy represents a significant departure from Marathon’s original “winner-takes-all” design philosophy. According to the game’s leadership, the studio wants to preserve the thrill for players who enjoy high-stakes extraction gameplay while creating alternative pathways for those seeking lower-pressure experiences or different playstyles.
This revamp comes as Bungie simultaneously announced plans to restore and revitalize Destiny 2, signaling the studio’s effort to rehabilitate its live-service portfolio. March 2027 will serve as a critical inflection point for Marathon, representing either successful recovery or continued struggle for the ambitious shooter.
