Don’t expect regular Destiny 2 updates to return, despite the surprise “unvaulting” of game additions

Despite announcing the end of Destiny 2 development and laying off nearly its entire team, Bungie has surprised players with news that it will begin “unvaulting” previously removed Destiny 2 content, including campaigns, raids, and destinations.

According to reporting by Forbes, which cited sources inside Bungie, all unvaulted content will be made available free to all players—regardless of whether they originally purchased the materials. However, Bungie is unlikely to restore everything that was previously removed from the game.

The unvaulting initiative represents a reversal from Bungie’s earlier content removal strategy. The studio had previously argued that Destiny 2 was becoming unwieldy and oversized, and contended that the game’s original campaign and the Forspoken expansion served as barriers or confusing relics that could deter new players from engaging with the title.

The surprise announcement offers a glimmer of hope to fans disappointed by the studio’s decision to end active development, though details remain sparse about which specific content will return and on what timeline. The free distribution of unvaulted materials marks a significant gesture toward the game’s playerbase following the studio’s restructuring.
