Discord takes a second swing at age verification, but don’t worry, this time it’ll guess how old you are with 90% accuracy
Discord is rolling out a revised global age verification system aimed at meeting legal obligations while addressing privacy concerns that sparked significant backlash against its initial announcement.
The updated system uses an automated age estimation model that analyzes account behavior patterns rather than requiring facial recognition or government ID submissions. According to Discord’s chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy, the model examines signals such as account age and the types of servers users participate in to estimate age groups, with Discord claiming over 90% accuracy.
The company estimates that more than 90% of users won’t need to manually verify their age, with the system automatically placing users into appropriate age groups based on their account activity. This approach aims to balance Discord’s regulatory compliance requirements—likely driven by age verification mandates in various jurisdictions—with user privacy concerns that generated significant pushback during the initial proposal.
The revised system represents a compromise solution: Discord maintains it provides necessary age verification while minimizing invasive data collection by avoiding examination of message content, calls, or other personal communications. The platform emphasizes that its revised approach is designed to keep Discord “safer for teens” while maintaining the same experience for adult users.
