Domhnall Gleeson Would Have Loved to Have Delved Deeper Into the ‘Bitterness’ of Star Wars’ General Hux

Domhnall Gleeson has reflected on his experience portraying General Hux in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, expressing regret that the character’s emotional complexity was never fully explored on screen. Gleeson states he would have enjoyed delving deeper into the “bitterness” that defined Hux throughout the films.

Hux appeared across all three sequel installments, beginning as a subordinate officer under Kylo Ren within the First Order hierarchy. His character arc took a dramatic turn in The Rise of Skywalker when it was revealed he had secretly become a Rebel spy. However, this revelation proved inconsequential. Upon discovery of his treason, Hux is quickly killed, bringing his trilogy-spanning story to an abrupt and unsatisfying conclusion.

Gleeson’s comments underscore a widespread criticism of The Rise of Skywalker: its rushed pacing and inadequate handling of character arcs. By reducing Hux’s transformation to a brief moment of betrayal followed by immediate death, the film squandered an opportunity to develop the character’s emotional journey. The actor’s remarks reveal frustration some cast members experienced regarding how the sequel trilogy’s final chapter resolved various storylines, leaving characters like Hux without the narrative depth their appearances across multiple films might have warranted.
