After eighteen years of jaggedy bowling, a new mod bestows GTA 4 with DLSS and FSR support
A new community mod called DLSS IV has brought upscaling and anti-aliasing support to Grand Theft Auto IV, eighteen years after the 2008 release. Created by modder ChunkLeChuck, the mod integrates Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR alongside DLAA to enhance performance on modern PC hardware.
While this isn’t the first attempt to modernize GTA 4’s graphics—Warcaco previously released an RTX Remix mod featuring DLSS alongside high-resolution textures and path tracing—DLSS IV offers a more streamlined approach. The mod focuses specifically on upscaling and anti-aliasing without broader graphics overhauls, positioning it as a lighter and cleaner solution for players seeking performance improvements.
The mod’s release follows Rockstar Games’ recent update to its modding guidelines ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI. The updated policy prohibits community-created story missions and unauthorized ports, but contains no restrictions on graphics enhancements, allowing projects like DLSS IV to proceed within acceptable boundaries.
DLSS, FSR, and DLAA are upscaling technologies using machine learning or temporal techniques to render at lower resolutions then upscale to higher ones, improving frame rates while maintaining visual quality. For an aging title like GTA 4, these technologies can provide substantial performance gains on contemporary systems.
