Xbox Exec Isn’t Freaking Out Over GTA 6 Presales
Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders are heavily skewed toward PlayStation 5, with a 3:1 ratio favoring Sony’s console over Xbox Series X|S, according to sales tracking data from Sensor Tower. This disparity was highlighted in a recent report from The Verge, which noted the concerning trend as part of broader challenges facing Xbox, including recent layoffs and studio reorganization.
However, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball pushed back against the negative framing, taking to social media to assert that Xbox is “very happy” with GTA 6 pre-order performance. Ball emphasized that the game is “breaking records for Xbox” and stated that internal Microsoft analysis shows the platform’s pre-order share aligns with its current share of the console market—a key distinction from the raw sales numbers suggesting PlayStation dominance.
The context behind PlayStation’s apparent advantage involves Sony’s significant marketing investment to position GTA 6 as a PlayStation experience, despite the game being a multiplatform release. While the marketing push may not make GTA 6 exclusive to PlayStation, it appears to have influenced consumer pre-order behavior.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 launching in less than two months, the pre-order numbers have become a flashpoint in platform competition. Xbox’s response suggests confidence in its pre-order performance relative to market expectations, even if PlayStation maintains a significant numerical advantage in pre-orders for what is widely anticipated to be one of the generation’s biggest releases.
