PSVR2 Misses Out on Virtual Reality Phoenix Wright Release
AMATA Games has announced a virtual reality adaptation of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, the fifth mainline entry in Capcom’s long-running courtroom battle series. Developed under license from Capcom, the VR version has been announced for Meta Quest and Meta’s upcoming VR Glasses, with a planned release in 2027.
However, Sony’s PSVR2 will not be receiving the game. This represents a notable platform decision, as PSVR2 has been attempting to build its VR game library. The Phoenix Wright series, known for its logical puzzle-solving gameplay centered around courtroom trials and evidence examination, could have been well-suited to virtual reality’s immersive mechanics.
The move to focus on Meta platforms aligns with broader industry trends around VR game development. Meta Quest continues to dominate the VR headset market, while Meta’s upcoming VR Glasses represent the company’s expansion into a new form factor. Meanwhile, PSVR2’s library has faced challenges in attracting major third-party releases despite Sony’s investment in the technology.
Dual Destinies was originally released on Nintendo 3DS in 2013. This VR adaptation marks a new direction for the franchise, transitioning from traditional gaming experiences to immersive virtual reality gameplay.
