Sekiro Anime Gets Official Streaming Date and Surprise Format Change
The anime adaptation of FromSoftware’s acclaimed action game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has secured its streaming home. Crunchyroll announced that Sekiro: No Defeat will premiere on the platform beginning January 2027, marking the first streaming release of the anime as it concludes its theatrical run in Japan.
The streaming release will introduce a significant format restructuring that differentiates it from the theatrical version. Rather than simply presenting the film on a streaming platform, Sekiro: No Defeat will be reformatted as an eight-episode series for Crunchyroll. The original theatrical version was presented as a 107-minute feature film, but the streaming adaptation will expand this content into an episodic structure, providing viewers with extended material beyond what appeared during the theatrical run.
Producer Tetsushi Suzuki announced the format change on the anime’s official website and issued an apology for not disclosing the restructuring sooner. The decision to convert the theatrical film into episodic content reflects broader industry trends, as anime films are increasingly adapted for streaming platforms in formats tailored to television distribution. This approach may allow for better narrative pacing suited to the episodic medium while providing additional value to streaming subscribers.
