‘I Don’t Think Starfield Was Anywhere Near Successful Enough to Do a Starfield 2’ – Former Bethesda Dev Casts Doubt on Sequel

Former Bethesda Lead Systems Designer Kurt Kuhlmann has cast serious doubt on the prospects of a Starfield sequel, stating that the original game was “nowhere near successful enough to do a Starfield 2.”

Three years after its release, Starfield has failed to meet the high expectations set during its lengthy development cycle and pre-launch marketing. While the game maintains a dedicated playerbase, critical and commercial reception fell significantly short of industry expectations for a major AAA release from one of gaming’s largest publishers.

Despite the lack of plans for a direct sequel, Kuhlmann acknowledged that a Starfield 2 could have represented a valuable opportunity to deliver on the ambitious “ultimate game” vision that the original struggled to fully realize. He suggested a sequel could have come much closer to fulfilling the scope envisioned during development, addressing shortcomings in the first installment.

Bethesda remains committed to supporting the original Starfield with additional content, including new DLC scheduled for 2027. The publisher has confirmed the game remains “an important part of our future,” indicating continued investment in expansions rather than a direct sequel.
