Experimental RPG developer Summer Eternal: ‘We’re giving away 5% of our studio to you, the Players’ in order to ‘mend the trust broken in this industry a thousand times over’

Experimental RPG developer Summer Eternal has announced plans to give players 5% ownership stake in the studio, representing an unconventional approach to game industry governance. The studio is implementing a FairShares model, a cooperative-based structure designed to reflect all stakeholders in the organization.

The governance framework includes multiple cooperative entities: a managing cooperative overseeing operations, a contributor cooperative comprising employees and freelancers, investor stakeholders, and now players themselves. Rather than a traditional shareholding structure, the model treats players as consumer-owners of the enterprise they support, marking a departure from conventional industry practices.

Summer Eternal frames the initiative as an effort to “mend the trust broken in this industry a thousand times over,” suggesting a response to widespread player skepticism toward game publishers and developers regarding practices like predatory monetization, live-service abandonment, and workplace issues. By extending ownership to the playerbase, the studio positions itself as prioritizing transparency and shared accountability with its community.

The announcement reflects growing experimentation in alternative business models within gaming, though the long-term viability and practical implications of player-owned game studios remain largely untested at scale.
