The Video Game History Foundation is scanning Japanese magazines now

The Video Game History Foundation’s free digital magazine archive has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 5,000 issues while simultaneously expanding its scope beyond English-language publications. The foundation has begun acquiring Japanese gaming magazines for its collection, starting with Neo Geo Freak, a publication that documented the influential Neo Geo arcade platform from 1995 to 2000.

To support the preservation of Japanese-language gaming materials, the foundation established partnerships with professional archivists in Japan and integrated their preferred document transcription methods into its existing text mapping toolset. Rather than undertaking the resource-intensive task of fully translating thousands of pages, the foundation strategically chose to index and translate major articles from the complete Neo Geo Freak publication run into English. This pragmatic approach enables content discovery and accessibility while dedicating translation resources to the most significant and relevant articles, demonstrating the foundation’s commitment to preserving global gaming history.
