Feature: World of Warcraft: Forever Brings the Largest Visual Leap in the MMO’s History

Blizzard has announced World of Warcraft: Forever, a significant visual overhaul for the long-running MMO that represents the largest graphics leap in the franchise’s history. The new game client preserves the classic art style and environments players know, but introduces advanced rendering techniques including ray-traced global illumination (RTGI) to modernize the visual presentation.

This upgrade comes after more than two decades of active development since World of Warcraft’s 2004 launch, during which the game has accumulated 11 expansion packs. The underlying graphics engine had become increasingly outdated relative to contemporary gaming standards, prompting Blizzard to undertake this comprehensive visual refresh.

The move to enhance rendering capabilities comes with a caveat: the new client will require higher system specifications than the current version. Players with older hardware may need to upgrade to experience the full visual improvements, marking a significant technical hurdle for some of the MMO’s long-time players who may be running older systems.
