“It genuinely breaks my heart”- Confusion and frustration reign as gaming communities react to Xbox’s drastic restructuring this week
Microsoft’s Xbox division underwent significant restructuring this week, announcing 268 additional job cuts as part of its ongoing “reset” strategy. The layoffs included the closure of Hellblade developer Ninja Theory, near-dismantlement of Halo Studios, and substantial cuts to Age of Empires developer World’s Edge.
Major studios were reorganized under different publishing operations: Obsidian Entertainment moved to Bethesda, while Rare and World’s Edge were placed under Activision. These changes represent a significant shift in Xbox’s organizational structure, effectively delegating studio management away from Xbox directly to its owned publishing divisions.
This represents the second major wave of layoffs in recent months. In July 2026, Microsoft announced plans to cut 3,200 jobs across its gaming division by July 2027. Approximately 1,900 layoffs have been implemented so far (1,600 in July plus these 268), with around 1,400 more anticipated in the coming months.
The restructuring follows major leadership changes in February 2026, when CEO Phil Spencer departed. New leadership, including CEO Asha Sharma and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, have positioned the cuts as necessary course correction after years of expansion and declining fan confidence.
However, internal sentiment contrasts sharply with public messaging. Employees criticized Xbox’s communication as lacking clear vision and authenticity, with id Software staff calling corporate messaging “bullshit corporate speak.” Gaming communities have responded with confusion and frustration, particularly regarding the future of major franchises like Halo and Game Pass’s direction.
