As Marathon’s player slump continues, Bungie announces plans to grow it “beyond extraction”
Marathon, Bungie’s extraction shooter, has struggled significantly since launch, and the studio has announced major changes to address the game’s commercial and player-retention issues. Bungie has acknowledged that the game failed to attract mainstream players because of its punishing difficulty and steep learning curve. Originally designed as an ultra-hardcore PvPvE extraction shooter, Marathon’s core mechanic of losing all equipped gear upon death—including items brought into missions—proved too frustrating for most players, particularly during PvP encounters.
To revitalize the game, Bungie plans to shift Marathon “beyond extraction,” creating more approachable experiences with varying levels of challenge and commitment. The studio wants to preserve the hardcore extraction experience for dedicated players while simultaneously opening the game to new audiences seeking less punishing gameplay. These changes will begin rolling out in October with a Nightfall refresh. Bungie’s pivot represents a significant departure from Marathon’s original design philosophy, acknowledging that the game’s unforgiving mechanics created a barrier to entry that proved incompatible with its commercial goals.
