LEC Salary Cap Drops to €1.65m and Could Decrease Further in 2029

Riot Games has announced significant reductions to the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) salary cap structure, marking a major shift in how the publisher manages regional esports competition. The maximum combined wage threshold for LEC teams will drop from €2 million to €1.65 million beginning in 2027, with Riot planning further decreases to €1 million by 2029.

The Sporting Financial Regulations (SFR), introduced in 2024, function as a soft salary cap system specifically targeting the five highest-paid players on each roster. Riot implemented these regulations to promote long-term financial stability across the European esports ecosystem while maintaining competitive balance among teams. The system was designed to prevent excessive spending by wealthier organizations that might otherwise dominate competition through financial power alone.

These successive reductions represent a strategic pivot in how Riot Games manages League of Legends competition in Europe. The declining salary thresholds will affect all LEC organizations and will likely influence player salaries, contract negotiations, and team roster construction strategies in the coming years. Teams will need to adjust their spending patterns and potentially restructure their financial commitments to players to comply with the new caps.

The changes continue Riot’s broader strategy of implementing financial controls across its esports properties to ensure sustainable competition.
